Is Fashion Powerful?

Is fashion powerful?  Is it positively impacting the world?  It’s interesting to me the comments I get about fashion blogging. When people hear I'm a fashion blogger, a lot of their comments are, "that's interesting, or "that's nice."   I get the feeling people think it’s vain or self-involved because that's what they think fashion is. Fashion can be these things too.  But if you dig deeper, you would realize fashion can be so much more than vanity.  It can be powerful. It can impact the world.

For the first time in my life, I am the strongest I have ever been.  I am the most confident that I've ever been. I owe that to God working in my life, and using my journey in creativity through fashion to cause a lot of this growth.  You see fashion is empowering.  It’s creative.  It builds confidence.   It’s so much more powerful than something silly or vain.

If it was just something that was self-involved, then I would have stopped already.  It’s a hustle, and it should be because nothing in life that's meaningful should be easy. I spend hours planning the content to shoot, shooting the content, and editing.  Everything meaningful takes sacrifice.   That's when you know what you're really about. So I’m thankful for the hustle.  It means it really matters.

However you hustle in life, whatever you are working on, be thankful for that because you have found that thing.  That gift you uniquely have to impact the world.  It's ok if not everyone understands it.  That's part of it too.  If you're like me, then people not understanding is hard.  I'm big into connecting, and if I feel a disconnect then I want to find a way to explain it differently to you.  Maybe that's why I'm writing this post, because I want you to get it.  I want you to understand why I'm spending my time on this blog.   It's not just about me.  It's about encouragement.  It's about community. And it's about changing the culture of competition that is ever present in our lives, and especially in the fashion world.

This competition in the fashion community tries to shut out people who have tremendous gifts and talents to impact the world.  I'm talking about men and women who don't fit into the body image that runways are saturated with.  I'm talking about people of color who are not celebrated and represented enough in the fashion community.  I don't want my blog to just be about trends and outfits that I have put together.  Creativity is important, but if it is not positively impacting the culture of fashion, then what am I pouring all this time and energy into? So going forward, I am going to be sharing more on my blog that's personal and working toward being a part of a fashion community that celebrates difference fully.  Fashion is that unique platform where this can powerfully happen, and I want to be a part of that.  How about you?
