Thrifting 101

I believe fashion is a way to express how unique each of us is. Sometimes though, I find myself comparing myself to other women. I have found myself thinking too much about who has the newest..... fill in the blank. When I do this, it's never something that builds me up or gives me freedom.  I'm all for beautiful, designer clothing if they are quality and you love the style.  But I don't buy into buying a brand just because of the brand. That makes me buy into the comparison game.

Brands can put so much pressure on you to fit a certain image, and our society definitely plays into that. I am passionate about fashion, but I want to have it express who I am without falling into the pitfalls of the comparison game that often happens in the fashion world.   If you love a piece of clothing, and you found it in a retail store then wonderful! But if you found it at a thrift store, then that's just as great! (if not better because you probably got a great deal!)

I love to thrift. Minneapolis has a variety of thrift store to suit your style. My favorite place to thrift in the Minneapolis area is by far Arc's Value Village.  There are a few in the area, but my favorite is the one on Brooklyn Blvd.  Here are some pieces that I found at Arc.

Note: I know many fashion bloggers include links to their outfits.  I will do my best to link the most similar items I can find to the thrifted pieces. I will link new pieces that I buy from non-thrift shops as well.  I know that when I'm reading other fashion blogs, I often use their outfits as inspiration.  I hope that this blog will inspire your fashion sense.  Even more than that, I hope that it encourages you to love yourself more and not compare yourself to society's view of beauty.  I know I'm on that journey too.

In this look I found the Levi's jacket at Arc.  One thing that I love about Arc is that it's very organized, and unlike some thrift stores you are able to find pieces in your size easily.  I find steals all the time there! This jacket I got for $5.00!

The jeans in this photo are level 99 Jeans, and I actually cut holes in the knees because I like the more casual look of them.  These are not thrifted. I included a link to these jeans at the end of this page. The shoes I'm wearing are Vans that I bought from Journey's.  Yes, I have a thing with white shoes and clothing, and no I don't do a good job of keeping them clean.  The first night I wore them, I went dancing and they got pretty dirty.  I've had to clean them regularly because I can't stop wearing them! Baking soda and white shoe polish work wonders.

Here is the same Levi's jacket and Vans that I love.  I'm also wearing a thrifted skirt here. This is one of the rare pieces that I did not get from Arc.  I bought it from Unique thrift store in Crystal for $3.50! I love the metal hooks on the side and the plaid print.  It has a very 90's vibe that I'm really into.

Here's a view of the back of the jacket, as well as the thrifted skirt.  I love the fit of both of these pieces.

Here are those same level 99 jeans that I wore with the previous outfits. They are so comfortable. The sweater that I'm wearing is Calvin Klein, thrifted from Arc (where else?!).  I got this sweater for $4.50!  Another great thing about Arc is that they have half off a certain colored tag each week which calls for more savings! Of course I love brand new clothes too, but there's something about thrifting that's so wonderful.  It's more of a search, which makes it incredibly exciting when you find something that you love.   Reusing is important to me, and thrifting is definitely connected to that.  Arc supports our community as well. For more than 30 years  Arc’s Value Village has helped make life better for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.  It's a great shopping experience, and proceeds go to a great cause! If you live in the area you should definitely check it out!    xoxo, Alyssa
